SNL Season 44: Seth Meyers
Kanye West Donald Trump Cold Open: I guess we have Alec Baldwin as Trump again for the time being. He wasn't as insufferable here as he was last season, but this felt sort of bland anyway. SNL was in a spot where they almost had to address the wild Kanye meeting, and the cold open is the most logical spot for that. This sort of went by the numbers, with Trump's thoughts spoken out loud on how wild Kanye sounds. (6.6)
Monologue: (7.9)
Movie Talkback: (4.7)
Beta Force (ad): This reminded me of the one prescription drug parody that "The Rock" did. Here we see Seth's character all jacked up on testosterone, looking wild, and its his wife, played by Aidy Bryant, who uses 'beta force' to lower his levels again. (7.7)
Traffic Stop: (5.5)
A Frightening Tale (short): I was wondering where this was going, but it paid off in the end. It was sort of an inside ballpark joke about hollywood and script writers. Seth tales a harrowing tale of how he is now frequently contacted by a friend who goes on how movies are all the same, and he has a unique vision. (8.3)
Jail Cellmate: SNL really went there with this one. Seth's character ends up being Bill Cosby's cellmate. This seemed like a vehicle for Kenan to lay it all out there with his Cosby impersonation. It was sort of a mixed bag. (7.0)
Weekend Update: The first guest featured Heidi Gardner as a comprehensive Goop spokesperson. Heidi does this sort of character really well.
And of course, we got a 'really!?' segment with Seth. (7.6)
Bayou Benny's Liberal Lagniappe: On paper, this shouldn't have worked at all. Beck Bennett, with his Cajun accent and all, hosts this liberal roundtable like show. His character is very much like Jason Sudeikis's in Maine Justice. There's just something about the way Beck plays it up that makes this all work. (7.9)
Cuban Vacation: (6.7)
Trees (short): Much like Bayou Benny, this was a character driven short that made it work. In this case, Chris Redd's character who really, really cares about the treed and the environment. (8.1)
Halloween Gig: (6.9)
This episode was an improvement on last week, but it still felt like it was missing something. Seth Meyers was a solid host, but the material sometimes faltered. Maybe its SNL writers feeling a bit exhausted, but it feels like the political material thus far has been subpar. We'll see how things go as they take a couple weeks off. (7.08)
Adam Driver: 7.33
Seth Meyers: 7.08
Awkwafina: 6.48

SNL Season 44: Awkwafina
Brett Kavanaugh Post-Game Cold Open: SNL took a step back with its Kavanaugh related cold open this week. This just felt lesser. Basically, we got a glimpse into the GOP senate's locker room, with a majority of the cast portraying various senators. Granted, Cecily Strong's Susan Collins impression was strong. Beyond that, this just fell a bit flat. (6.3)
Monologue: Awkwafina had a solid stand-up lite monologue, including a fitting tribute to Lucy Liu, the last Asian woman to host SNL. (7.5)
Late Night Battle: (7.2)
Emergency Alert (short): This is where SNL runs into a bit of a problem in dealing with the week's news. By the time they came to this, the whole emergency presidential alert business felt like old news. It doesn't help when you have late night shows that have already done bits on this (like Stephen Colbert smashing his phone). Being as it may, this was a solid effort. (7.5)
Cleopatra: (4.0)
Ted Cruz Rally (short): Now this was a good political sketch. Trying to recreate Beto's energetic rallies, we see Ted Cruz trying...and failing. Its just always a good time to mock Cruz. (8.0)
Weekend Update: Update continued discussing Kavanaugh's confirmation.
Alex Moffat and Mikey Day returned as Eric & Don Jr. It really doesn't mater what they're actually saying, just the physical comedy here is always a great time.
Pete Davidson returned again to discuss Kanye's post-show antics last week. (7.4)
So You're Willing To Date A Magician: (4.5)
Baby Shower: (4.3)
Pumpkin Patch (short): This short was something else. I wasn't sure where it was going to go, but all I'll say is that they sure committed. (7.6)
Film Panel: (7.0)
Overall, a lackluster SNL episode. This was more on the lack of material than it was the host. Awkwafina was present throughout the episode, but it was just the material that failed her. We'll see if SNL can pick it up next week to close out this opening stretch with Seth Meyers. (6.48)
Adam Driver: 7.33
Awkwafina: 6.48

SNL Season 44: Adam Driver
SNL returned at quite the opportune moment. How did Adam Driver do in the premiere? Onto the review. (sidenote: I'm no longer counting the musical acts into the review....which given Kanye this week...gives this show a bump up in the overall average, to put it lightly)
Kavanaugh Hearing Cold Open: There was a lot of intrigue in how SNL would take on last week's wild Kavanugh hearings. SNL did a less than stellar job with Anita Hill, so there was added pressure. They brought in Matt Damon to play Kavanaugh, and he portrayed him as a frat bro pretty much. The wild anger that he showed was on full display. They could have done a better job with Chuck Grassley, but Kate McKinnon as Lindsey Graham was inspired. There have been some think pieces on how SNL maybe muted the actual hearings, etc, but I thought they did a good job here depicting Kavanaugh. Maybe it didn't quite reach the Tina Fey/Sarah Palin levels, but I think they've defined Kavanaugh for a segment of a public with Damon's impersonation. (9.2)
Monologue: (5.1)
Fortnite Squad: (6.0)
A New Kyle (short): I'll get to this a bit in weekend update, but the big update over the summer was Pete Davidson's engagement to Ariana Grande. They addressed that here in this short with Kyle Mooney trying to recreate himself in Pete's image. Maybe its an unpopular opinion, but I think Kyle is vastly underrated on SNL. Never change Kyle. (7.5)
Coffee Shop: (6.4)
'80s Party: The conversations around Kavanaugh have brought light upon the culture in the 1980s. SNL took that angle with this short, a look at a 1980s fraternity party, and the consequences that could result from choices made. (8.3)
Weekend Update: Jost and Che took on Kavanugh during Update, with Che making a good point....this was a job interview. If you might have committed sexual assault, and yell and shout...you're probably not going to get the job. Che went on further, discussing that "might" angle a bit further.
Kate McKinnon returned as RBG, talking about Kavanaugh. Then Pete Davidson talked about his wild, news-making summer. (8.5)
Career Day: I was surprised to see a 10-to-1 style of sketch go right after Update. Adam Driver as "Abraham Parnassus" was quite something. He just took command of this role and ran with it. I frequently say that there are some roles that only a certain host can portray, and this is one of them. (9.0)
Neo-Confederate Meeting: (6.0)
This premiere was quite Kavanaugh-driven. Apart from those pieces, it felt a bit muted, with the material in between falling a bit flat. This was probably just because of the events of the past week, but the political cold open was stronger than usual. Throughout last season, cold opens featuring Alec Baldwin's Trump often fell flat, so we'll see if Baldwin returns, or if they finally move on to a new direction. (7.33)
Adam Driver: 7.33
