2023 Pittsburgh Steelers Draft Preview: Part 2

CB - Emmanuel Forbes, Mississippi St. 6'1" 166










'22: 2nd All-American/1st All-SEC, 46tckls, 6INTs/3TDs, 10PU's, Blocked Kick

combine: 4.35s 40, 37.5" vert, 10'11" broad jump

strengths: Plays with smooth side-shuffle technique in deep zone. Above average pre-snap play recognition. Swings arms through catch point to separate the ball. Soft hands with the ability to leap & win at the high point. Can be hard to throw over the top of him. 

weaknesses: Below average foot slide to match the release. Aggressiveness makes him a double-move target. He needs to become more disciplined playing high to low in zone. A grab-and-drag tackler lacking play strength.

grade: 6.36 (Will eventually be a plus starter), Next Gen: 88 (Good)

LB - Jack Campbell, Iowa 6'5" 249










'22: 1st All-American, B10 DPOY, Dick Butkus Award, 128tckls/5.5TFLs

combine: 4.65s 40, 37.5" vert, 10'8" broad jump

strengths: Feel for blocking schemes and a nose for the action. Able to step downhill & neutralize the lead blocker. Finds his run fit and spills the action wide. Careful to close distance to ensure tackle success. Awareness and ball skills to succeed in zone coverage. 

weaknesses: Initial diagnosis movements lack suddenness. Allows climbing blockers into his frame before punching. Tall center of gravity slows change of direction in the open field. Lacking desired short-area burst in pursuit.

grade: 6.20 (Will eventually be an average starter) Next Gen: 82 (Good)





G - Andrew Vorhees, USC  6'6" 310


 









'22: 1st All-American/1st All-PAC12

combine: 29" vert, 8'9" broad jump, 38reps

strengths: Steps into run fits at quality angles. Consistently well-placed hands as a drive blocker. Reacts quickly to moving fronts post-snap. Pass set with a feel for A-gap pressure. Good firmness in outside hand to corral rusher.

weaknesses: Needs to do a better job of sliding feet to constrict gaps. Opponents can out-reach him with inside hands into his frame. Very average climb quickness to 2nd-level cutoffs. Inconsistent securing 1st block back side on combos. Had an ACL tear during the combine.

grade: 6.24 (Will eventually be an average starter) Next Gen: 75 (Good)

DT - Keeanu Benton, Wisconsin  6'4" 309









'22: 3rd All-BIG10, 35tckls/10TFLs, 4.5scks, 2PU's

combine: 5.08s 40, 29.5"vert, 9'3" broad jump, 25reps

strengths: Brute force to toss angle blocks out of the way. Able to shake center's pads with his initial punch. Very challenging to knock him off his feet. Clubbing, heavy hands help knock pass sets off-balance. 

weaknesses: Below average snap quickness into the neutral zone. Slow to read & move with blocker's initial reach steps. Inconsistent corkscrewing his post leg to take on double teams. Very limited tackle window & will primarily be an A-gap finisher. Slow-moving train once he's inside the pocket as a rusher.

grade: 6.25 (Will eventually be an average starter) Next Gen: 68 (Average)




DE - Tyler Lacy, Oklahoma St  6'4" 279










'22: 27 tot tckls, 3scks, 1FR, 1PU

combine: 5.11s 40, 28.5"vert, 9'8" broad jump, 30reps

strengths: Movements are loose & natural from engagement to pursuit. Sees the action and discards the block with good timing. Snap quickness helps him beat lateral blocks into the gap. Very capable with his hands in all facets. Punishing slap & smooth swim move allows access to the pocket. 

weaknesses: Comes off the ball with elevated pad level. Hip tightness limits his sink & anchor as an interior defender. Uneven getting from move to move as a rusher. Below average bull-rush power.

grade: 6.18 (Good backup with the potential to develop as a starter) Next Gen: 70 (Good)

OT - Darnell Wright, Tennessee  6'5" 333


 







'22: 1st All-SEC

combine: 5.01s 40, 29"vert, 9'6" broad jump

strengths: Bulldozer vibes when working double teams and combo blocks. Able to stand his ground through one-on-one power swaps. Jolts LBs out of positioning with push. Uses length for forceful redirection in protection. Stops speed-to-power attempts consistently.

weaknesses: Gets very little bend in his 2-point stance. Below average hand resets and finish as a run blocker. More of a catcher than a puncher. Shows confusion against twist.

grade: 6.38 (Will eventually be a plus starter) Next Gen: 84 (Good)

CB - Darius Rush, South Carolina  6'2" 198









'22: 38 tot tckls, 1FF, 2INTs, 7PU's

combine: 4.36s 40, 35"vert, 10'1" broad jump

strengths: Quickly crowds outside release to the boundary. Plays to his size when challenging the throw. Partitions off the catch area from trail position. Attacks deep throws with timing & accuracy. Productive tackler on punt cover team.

weaknesses: Struggles to match release due to elongated steps. Below average stop-start fluidity. Hip tightness prevents smooth transitions. Unable to hang with multi-breaking routes.

grade: 6.12 (Good backup with the potential to develop as a starter) Next Gen: 76 (Good)





OT - Cody Mauch,  North Dakota St  6'5" 302










'22: 1st All-American/1st All-MVFC

combine: 5.08s 40, 29"vert, 9' broad jump, 29reps

strengths: Looks to accelerate and obliterate down blocks. Sustains blocks on both the 1st & 2nd level. Above-average finisher as a run blocker. Communicates effectively with teammates in blitz pickup. Loose hips to redirect and recover in space.

weaknesses: Footwork in pass sets can get away form him. Heal-clicker pass slides open his base to bull-rush challenge. Has an elevated strike point getting into his double teams. Hands can get grabby when losing in early stages of the rep.

grade: 6.36 (Eventually will be a plus starter) Next Gen: 83 (Good)

WR - Kayshon Boutte, LSU  5'11" 195

strengths: Vertical speed fueled by a strong 2nd gear. Strides to separation when working across the field. Twitchy plant & burst to uncover cleanly underneath. Catch-and-run talent to turn short throws into chunk plays. 

weaknesses: Fails to stack & control defender's chase tempo. Doesn't extend and catch away from his body. Underdeveloped catch technique causes drops. Doesn't snap routes off with much precision. 

grade: 6.16 (Good backup with the potential to develop as a starter) Next Gen: 72 (Good)

DE - Adetomiwa Adebawore, Northwestern  6'2" 282














'22: Honorable All-BIG 10, 38tckls/9TFLs, 5scks, 2FFs

combine: 4.49s 40, 37.5" vert, 10'5" broad jump, 27reps

strengths: Good explosiveness in upper and lower body. Rapid punch & release move to slip past blockers. Uses leverage and hip strength to press through redirect blocks. 

weaknesses: Too caught up in playing the block rather than discarding it. Below average awareness & instincts. Too many missed tackles. Tight hips restrict ability to slide wide & improve pass-rush angles. OTs with length and strong hands derail his rush plans quickly.

grade: 6.12 (Good backup with potential to develop as a starter) Next Gen: 67 (Average)




LB - Yasir Abdullah, Louisville  6'1" 237









'22: 1st All-ACC, 63tckls/14.5TFLs, 9.5scks, 2INTs, 4PU's

combine: 4.47s 40, 36.5"vert, 10'9" broad jump

strengths: Batters in-line TEs with heavy hands. Sturdy base adds fuel to his leverage on the move. Strength and quickness makes him dangerous on twists. No wasted steps once he gets to the rush edge. Stalking speed to close on the QB. 

weaknesses: Can get caught up inside, causing him to lose his run contain. Allows protection to hack him with outside hand. Speed-to-power moves fail to threaten the pocket. Face-up rusher unable to flip his hips at the top of the rush.

grade: 6.13 (Good backup with the potential to develop as a starter) Next Gen: 69 (Average)





S- Ji'Ayir Brown, Penn St  5'11" 203










'22: 3rd All-BIG 10, PSU MVP, Rose Bowl MVP,  74tckls/7TFLs, 4.5scks, 4INTs, 3PU's, 2FFs

combine: 4.65s 40, 32.5"vert, 9'11" broad jump, 18reps

strengths: Plays with the same motor throughout the game. Versatility as a nickel corner or safety. Triggers downhill into the catch point. Good closing burst in coverage, as a blitzer & as a tackler. Determined and physical as a run supporter.

weaknesses: Can be frenetic and inefficient with his movement. Moved out of position by QB's misdirection. Inconsistent matching route breaks effectively. Must play with better downhill control and positioning as a tackler.

grade: 6.25 (Will eventually be an average starter) Next Gen: 79 (Good)
