Buffalo Bills 2023 Draft Review

With the draft in the books, it's time to review what the Steelers did. All the summaries come from NFL.com.

RD 1 (25) TE - Dalton Kincaid, Utah  6'4"  246

'22: 3rd All-American/1st All-PAC 12, 70rec/890yds/8TDs

strengths: Fluid athlete with impressive catch radius. Has enough speed to threaten vertically & across the field. Possesses outstanding ball-tracking and focus as a receiver. Hands are sticky & sure through contact. Makes well-timed moves for jump-ball victories.

weaknesses: Liability as a run blocker. Jarred off of his base by average contact. Routes could use better speed variance. Physical defenders are able to slow his routes.

grade: 6.48 (Will be a good starter within 2 years) Next Gen: 88 (Good)

comp: Zach Ertz

RD 2 (59) G - O'Cyrus Torrence, Florida  6'5" 330

'22: 1st All-American/1st All-SEC

combine: 5.31 40, 23.5"vert, 8'5"broad jump, 23reps

strengths: Uses independent hands for added balance in pass protection. Quick to read twists & search for adjusted assignments. Penalty-free throughout '22. Size helps to generate movement as a drive blocker. Above average strain to sustain his blocks.

weaknesses: Struggles to effectively mirror athletic rushers. Over-extension in pass sets opens him to counters. Heavy-legged lunger on the 2nd level. Very average production on double-team blocks.

grade: 6.38 (Will eventually be a plus starter) Next Gen: 80 (Good)

comp: Tyre Phillips

RD 3 (91) LB - Dorian Williams, Tulsa  6'1"  228

'22: 1st All-AAC, Cotton Bowl Def. MVP 132tckls/8.5TFLs, 5scks, 2INTs, 7PUs, 2FFs

combine: 4.49 40, 33.5"vert, 10'broad jump

strengths: Gets into blockers with proper knee bend. Sits through traffic & identifies ball-carriers. A wrap-up tackler in the hole. Springy with quality burst in open-field pursuit. Fluid in zone coverage with man cover talent.

weaknesses: Scrapes to the ball can lack control & leverage. Below average point-of-attack strength/skill set. Swallowed by blocks on 2nd level. Recognizes play design but fails to beat the blocker to the spot.

grade: 6.10 (A good backup with the potential to develop as a starter) Next Gen: 74 (Good)

RD 5 (150) WR - Justin Shorter, Florida  6'4"  229

'22: 9 starts - 29rec/577yds/2TDs

combine: 4.55 40, 35.5"vert, 10'6"broad jump, 18reps

strengths: Highly effective ball-tracking & high-point ability. Better footwork getting into comebacks than most his size. Above-average focus & catch strength in traffic. Able to sink low and cradle throws off the turf. Secures body catches into collisions.

weaknesses: Slow getting off the snap & into the pattern. Loses route momentum making turns. Inconsistent rescuing the challenging throw. Below average foot quickness for yards after the catch.

grade: 6.12 (A good backup with potential to develop as a starter) Next Gen: 56 (Below Average)

comp: Bryan Edwards

RD 7 (230)  G - Nick Broeker, Mississippi  6'4" 305

'22: 2nd All-SEC

combine: 5.27 40

strengths: Sustains attack with vice grips for hands. All-day worker & block finisher. Takes appropriate angles up to 2nd-level targets. Impressive recovery quickness against sudden movement at the line. Can sink a sudden anchor with flexible lower half. Looks for work when uncovered in protection.

weaknesses: Lacks desired athleticism as a move blocker. Must learn to play with tighter, inside hands. Needs to play with better poise & control in pass sets. Chases and voids his gap too easily.

grade: 5.95 (Average backup/special teamer) Next Gen: 68 (Average)

RD 7 (252) CB - Alex Austin, Oregon St  6'1"  195

'22: Honorable All-PAC 12, 57tckls, 1sck, 2INTs/1TD, 10PUs

combine: 4.55 40, 33"vert, 10'2"broad jump

strengths: Above-average ball production over the last 2 seasons. Sinks into balanced zone positioning between routes. Communicative in space & overlaps coverage to make plays. Excellent field awareness of route combinations. He cares about run defense & hustles from the back side.

weaknesses: Unable to swivel & recover when routes cross his face. Loses ground against pure vertical routes. Does too much leg diving & not enough wrap tackling after the catch. Needs to come off blocks more quickly in run support.

grade: 5.86 (Average backup/special teamer) Next Gen: 61 (Average)
