Bills 2021 Draft Preview: Part 1

OT Sam Cosmi - Texas  6'6"  314lbs





Strengths: Excellent bend & flexibility. Looks great in space and moves like a big TE. Athletic tools to find his way in a pro rushing attack. Above-average foot agility on inside slide. Hands are quiet & punch-ready. 

Weaknesses: Average fire off the ball & into his block. Too segmented in climbing on work-up blocks. Not a consistent finisher as a drive blocker. Relies on upper-body strength over positioning. Leaves arms and hands out too long for rushers to attack.

Comp: Connor Williams

Grade: 6.26 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)



OG Wyatt Davis - Ohio St. 6'4"  315lbs



2020: 1st All-American/1st All-BIG 10

Strengths: Pops DTs with stiff inside hands. A very powerful lower body. Can overtake one-on-one blocks in test of strength. Slides feet & hips into secure position post-contact. Consistent inside hands in pass protection. Has flexibility to sink & anchor bull rush. Quick punch and recover when passing off twists. 

Weaknesses: Body control is very average. Average feet to make block adjustments on moving bodies. Lethargic moving from 1st to 2nd block on combos. Prematurely wanders away from home base at times in pass protection. Lack of short-area quickness to close down gaps against blitzers.

Comp: John Miller

Grade: 6.24 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)



LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah - Notre Dame  6'2" 221lbs



2020: 1st All-American/1st All-ACC, Butkus Award, ACC DPOY, 62tckls/11TFLs, 1.5scks, 3FFs, 1INT/3PUs

Strengths: Rare level of explosiveness, speed & agility. Moves around the field like a free-wheeling RB. Sudden, lateral movements to slip blocks. Range to challenge outside runs & perimeter throws is elite. Run-through hitter with no brakes into contact. Traits to succeed as a high-impact blitzer. Can cover TEs, RBs and some slot receivers.

Weaknesses: Doesn't play with LB fundamentals yet. Inconsistent instincts to dissect what the offense is doing. Taking on blocks can be a chore. Combustible energy causes mistakes in pursuit & tackling. Flow to football lacks proper leverage and consistent angles. Will bypass wrap-up tackles for the big hit.

Comp: Derwin James

Grade: 6.82 (Year 1 Quality Starter)



LB Nick Bolton - Missouri  5'11" 237lbs



2020: 2nd All-American/1st All-SEC, 95tckls/7.5TFLs, 2scks, 5PUs

Strengths: Field-savvy with instincts to diagnose misdirection. Heavy hands with good pop to take on blocks. Pursues ball-carrier with patience & leverage. Excellent feel for attack timing downhill. Great awareness & ballhawking. Enough man-cover talent to play on all 3 downs.

Weaknesses: Average lateral quickness. Inconsistent to strike & separate from blockers. Needs to improve angles to elude box traffic. Top-end speed appears below-average. Below-average lateral agility as an open-field tackler.

Comp: Denzel Perryman

Grade: 6.33 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



RB Najee Harris - Alabama   6'2"  230lbs



2020: Doak Walker Award, 1st All-SEC, 251c/1,446yds/26TDs, 43rec/425yds/4TDs

Strengths: Runs decisively and with urgency. Able to gather & cut on short notice. Crisp change of direction. Makes a large number of tacklers miss. Plus balance to keep the run on track through 1st contact. Soft hands with above-average ball skills. Willing & able in pass protection. Good ball security.

Weaknesses: Runs with inconsistent feel for tempo. Lacks speed to threaten for the big play. Average burst between tackles. Average acceleration out of his cuts. Takes on heavy contact on a consistent basis.

Comp: Steven Jackson

Grade: 6.46 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



CB Jaycee Horn - South Carolina  6'1"  205lbs



2020: 2nd All-SEC, 16tckls/1TFL, 2INTs/6PUs

Strengths: Plays to his size with physical man coverage. Capable of playing in a variety of coverage schemes. Confident & patience squaring up release. Balances attention between route & the QB. Bodies up down the field before finding the ball. Able to track down receiver after allowing early separation. An underrated blitzer with ability to slip blocks & get after QBs. 

Weaknesses: Too much blatant grabbing & holding during the route. Average directional change when shadowing route. Too content to let others do dirty work in run support. Needs more consistent approach & technique as a tackler. Tunnel vision concerns.

Comp: Jimmy Smith

Grade: 6.46 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



CB Tyson Campbell - Georgia  6'1"  193lbs



2020: 29tckls/2.5TFLs, 1INT/5PUs

Strengths: Impressive short-area twitch and agility shadowing the route. Speed & footwork for optimal route phasing. Flexibility provides sudden sink & stop, mirroring comebacks. Swivels for smooth directional change in coverage. Ability to recover, close and make plays on the ball.

Weaknesses: Must continue to get comfortable trusting his feet. Can improve downfield positioning to play the ball. Inconsistent whipping his head around to locate throws. Needs to adjust zone coverage rather than guarding the pass. Slow getting off of receiver blocks.

Comp: William Jackson III

Grade: 6.37 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



OG Alijah Vera-Tucker - USC  6'5"  308lbs



2020: 1st All-PAC 12

Strengths: Able to step out & play tackle effectively. Impressive reactive adjustments on the 2nd level. Displays recovery talent when he's cross-faced. Plays under control. Gets to full extension with inside hands. Substantial anchor to eat a bull rush. Quick to process twists & alter assignment. 

Weaknesses: Pad level can get away from him off the snap. Below-average creating engagement momentum with settle steps. Average sink & push to clear debris. Has a narrow drive base. Needs to tighten up footwork in run & passing games.

Comp: Will Hernandez

Grade: 6.43 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



CB Aaron Robinson - UCF  6' 186lbs



2020: 2nd All-AAC, 41tckls/1TFL, 7PUs

Strengths: Operates with effective punch when allowed to press. Good foot quickness and agility. Very aware of traffic on rub routes and crossing routes. Good angles to the football in coverage & post-catch. Legit hitter who's able to jar the ball loose on catch attempts. Steps boldly into the action in run support. Has sense of when to wrap-up and when to chop out the runner's legs.

Weaknesses: Has trouble with over-committing against release fakes. Below-average recognition of route combos. Outruns downfield route phase, losing contact on comebacks. Way too many busted coverages. Inconsistent working from off-man technique.

Comp: Steven Nelson

Grade: 6.30 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



OT Teven Jenkins - Oklahoma St.  6'5"  310lbs



2020: 1st All-BIG 12

Strengths: Excellent body control. Powerful core allows him to base up & flatten the edge of RBs. Full sustain mode closes door once his hands lock in. Athleticism for smooth drift from block to block on 2nd level. Keeps hands back until his target is within range. Strong, sure hands clench up & stalls rush attack. Solid mirror & redirection win space.

Weaknesses: Longer defenders can stab & separate from him. Could struggle to gain enough depth against speed rush. Loses contact with run blocks, showing occasional leaning.

Comp: Joe Thuney

Grade: 6.42 (Will Be a Starter With First 2 Seasons)



LB Jabril Cox - LSU  6'3"  232lbs



2020: 58tckls/6.5TFLs, 3INTs/1TD, 5PUs

Strengths: Outstanding field range with explosive closing burst. Agility to make sudden change of direction is pursuit. Steps upfield to challenge the block & push the run back inside. Pocket navigation & acceleration to become a dangerous blitzer. Sticks & runs with pass-catching TEs in coverage. 

Weaknesses: Plays upright from the 2nd level too often. Early play quickness is limited by excessive thinking. Lacking patience necessary to decipher misdirection. Loses pursuit leverage. Needs to become more aggressive taking on blocks. Inconsistent reading lane choices & blocking schemes.

Comp: Tahir Whitehead

Grade: 6.26 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)



C Quinn Meinerz -- Wisconsin-Whiewater   6'3" 320lbs




Strengths: Has premium core strength. Operates with good knee bend & wide, sturdy base. Effective hand flashes to keep rushers guessing. Athleticism to work downfield in screen game. Strong hands to latch & cinch up the block.

Weaknesses: Needs to improve footwork into block fits. A little too much forward lean off the snap and into 1st contact. Average getting to proper landmarks on the 2nd level. Will need to add a level of finesse & patience. 

Comp: Ryan Jensen

Grade: 6.31 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)




LB Zaven Collins- Tulsa   6'3"  260lbs



2020: Bronco Nagurski Award/Chuck Bednarik Award, 1st All-American, AAC DPOY, 53tckls/11.5 TFLs, 4scks, 4INTs/2TDs, Blocked kick

Strengths: Consistent, impactful production. Range to make plays all over. Size & knock-back power to take on all blocks. Terrific 2nd effort as a tackler. Plays disciplined team defense. Good awareness of air traffic in zone coverage. Reads QBs & slides into passing lanes. 

Weaknesses: Doesn't always impose size. Instincts & diagnosis are just average. Needs time to gather & change direction. Average reactive agility. Not a natural rusher when turned lose off the edge.

Comp: Leighton Vander Esch

Grade: 6.39 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)
