Steelers 2021 Draft Preview: Part 2

TE Kenny Yeboah - Mississippi   6'4"  250lbs



2020: 27rec/524yds/6TDs

Strengths: Good vertical speed. A plus ball tracker with elevated timing. Will go up & over coverage to snare the catch. Wide, quick lateral steps for cutoff blocks. Offers kick & punt coverage potential.

Weaknesses: Below-average aggressiveness at the point of attack. His use of hands will need to get better. Focus drop issues. Inconsistent play speed in routes.

Grade: 5.84 (Backup/Special Teamer)



OG Alijah Vera-Tucker - USC  6'5"  308lbs



2020: 1st All-PAC 12

Strengths: Able to step out & play tackle effectively. Impressive reactive adjustments on the 2nd level. Displays recovery talent when he's cross-faced. Plays under control. Gets to full extension with inside hands. Substantial anchor to eat a bull rush. Quick to process twists & alter assignment. 

Weaknesses: Pad level can get away from him off the snap. Below-average creating engagement momentum with settle steps. Average sink & push to clear debris. Has a narrow drive base. Needs to tighten up footwork in run & passing games.

Comp: Will Hernandez

Grade: 6.43 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



LB Chazz Surratt - UNC   6'2"  227lbs



2020: 1st All-ACC, 91tckls/7.5TFLs, 6scks, 1INT/3PUs

Strengths: Good combination of speed & athleticism from the 2nd level. Above-average lateral burst. Finds his way to the ball even after an early block. Instant pursuit trigger. Drives full body into the ball-carrier. Able to close distance quickly in coverage. 

Weaknesses: Durability concerns. Doesn't have fully formed LB instincts. Struggles diagnosing mesh-point & following where the ball is headed. Overflows the action.

Comp: Kamu Grugier-Hill

Grade: 6.14 (Good Backup Who Could Become a Starter)



RB Jaret Patterson - Buffalo  5'7"  195lbs



2020: 2nd All-American/1st All-MAC, MAC OPOY, 141c/1,072yds/19TDs, 

Strengths: Good ball security. Has a low center of gravity. Sneaks through spaces. Keeps feet moving throughout the carry. Rolls through initial contact. Forces missed tackles. Squares up incoming rusher & blocks with proper technique. 

Weaknesses: Feet look a little unsure while bouncing downhill. Doesn't always show trust in desired run lane. Hips tightness slows one-cut ability in outside zone. Bit of a one-speed runner. Not much of a pass catching option.

Comp: Jacquizz Rodgers

Grade: 5.98 (Backup/Special Teamer)



QB Trey Lance - North Dakota St.  6'4"  224lbs



Strengths: Makes calls to set his own protection. Play-fake aficionado under center. Processes progressions very quickly. Able to mentally re-calibrate his attack when the play comes off schedule. Makes attempt to throw targets away from coverage. Makes quality touch throws into the sideline. Knows his way around the pocket. Above-average speed, athleticism & power. 

Weaknesses: Needs to trust his pocket. Pressure pulls his attention from deliverable throws. Needs to become more decisive & trust his eyes. Leavers lower half behind, diminishing his drive velocity. Leaves too many deep balls short. Can be overly cautious.

Comp: Josh Allen

Grade: 6.47 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



QB Jamie Newman - Wake Forest  6'3"  235lbs



Strengths: Well-built frame to absorb hits in the pocket. Throws a pretty ball with a nice, tight spiral. Upper-body twitch for quick set & rip on run-pass options. Arm talent to sling it outside the numbers. Looks safety off to maintain single coverage. Allows big receivers to go make a play with his deep-ball placement. 

Weaknesses: Erratic ball placement inside the hashes. Tardiness through progressions hurts his timing. Too content sticking with primary target. Needs to improve release mechanics to improve accuracy. Inconsistent feel & reaction to pocket pressure. Too often an easy pocket target for rushers to find.  

Grade: 6.00 (Developmental Traits-Based Prospect)



C Landon Dickerson - Alabama  6'6"  333lbs



2020: Rimington Trophy, 1st All-American/1st All-SEC

Strengths: NFL-caliber at guard as well as center. Tight, compact steps into run fits. Core strength maintains a well-balanced power zone throughout the rep. Quick hands with dynamite in his punch. Good recognition of gaming defensive fronts in pass protection. Will be hard to run through for bull rushers. Plays under his pads with big, strong hands & sturdy base.

Weaknesses: Durability concerns. Leaves his feet behind as a drive blocker. Foot agility is slightly below-average. Can be a little labored to mirror LBs on the 2nd level. Needs to guard against lraning in pass protection.

Comp: Frank Ragnow

Grade: 6.42 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



OT Dillon Radunz - North Dakota St.  6'4"  301lbs



Strengths: Quality stiffness in initial punch. Able to unlock hips & sink his anchor. Plays with toughness at the point of attack. Fires off the snap with good pad level. Works with inside hands as his default. Works feet into position laterally before striking on the move. Solid core power when engaging head-up.

Weaknesses: Will have trouble redirecting against rush counters. Lacks athletic ability for desired recovery. Very average lateral quickness to catch cross-face stunts. Upper body lurches too far forward as a run blocker. Below-average body control.

Comp: Alex Lewis

Grade: 6.25 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)


TE Tommy Tremble - Notre Dame  6'4"  248lbs



2020: 19rec/218yds

Strengths: Activated as a blocker from a variety of formations. Accelerates & crashes into targets as a lead blocker. Athletic ability & speed stand out as a pass catcher. Bursts off the snap & races into route. Can separate on 2nd and 3rd level routes.

Weaknesses: Gives away short routes with altered initial speed. Double catches & drops are a concern. Still learning to fit up block with proper platform & pad level. Needs quiet, efficient hands at the point of attack.

Comp: Drew Sample

Grade: 6.32 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



WR Rondale Moore - Purdue  5'7"  181lbs



2020: Honorable All-BIG 10, 35rec/270yds, 6c/32yds, 1TD

Strengths: Races to top speed & maintains it though the route. Talented in manipulating coverage out of position. Sudden with smooth acceleration into speed cuts. Built for option routes. Plays like a RB with the ball in his hands. Instinctive reading the field & creating yards after contact. 

Weaknesses: Stronger CBs can slow him at the top of the route. Needs throws put on top of him. Focus drops have been an issue. Average in contested catch match-ups. Decelerates when turning his head to find the ball downfield. 

Comp: Tyler Lockett

Grade: 6.22 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)


C Quinn Meinerz -- Wisconsin-Whiewater   6'3" 320lbs



Strengths: Has premium core strength. Operates with good knee bend & wide, sturdy base. Effective hand flashes to keep rushers guessing. Athleticism to work downfield in screen game. Strong hands to latch & cinch up the block.

Weaknesses: Needs to improve footwork into block fits. A little too much forward lean off the snap and into 1st contact. Average getting to proper landmarks on the 2nd level. Will need to add a level of finesse & patience. 

Comp: Ryan Jensen

Grade: 6.31 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



RB Javonte Williams - UNC  5'10"  220lbs



2020: 2nd All-American/2nd All-ACC, 157c/1,140yds/19TDs, 25rec/305yds/3TDs

Strengths: Quality feel for development & flow of the run lane. Good creativity for a power back. Runs a tight track off the blocker's hips on cuts. Very hard to stop in his tracks by 1 tackler. Explodes through contact. Stiff jabs discard angle tackles to the perimeter. Runs wheel routes, circle routes & option routes out of the backfield.

Weaknesses: Needs runway to gather & cut on stretch plays. Average acceleration through line of scrimmage. Needs to work on ball security. Below-average hands with too many drops. Can improve hand usage to better collect blitzers.

Comp: Kareem Hunt

Grade: 6.40 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



LB Garret Wallow - TCU  6'2"  220lbs



2020: 1st All-BIG 12, 90tckls/9TFLs, 3scks, 3FFs

Strengths: Good football IQ with time at safety & LB. Has good patience. Steps downhill and doesn't wait for blocks to find him. Recovers from blocks well to find tackle chances. Athleticism to slip around blocks quickly when he wants. 

Weaknesses: Guessing & chance-taking can pull him out of position. Below-average play strength. Gets washed away by angle blocks. Allows blockers to get too deep into his frame. Needs better take-on technique. Doesn't have desired coverage talent. Open-field tackling concerns.
