Steelers 2021 Draft Preview: Part 3

CB Jaycee Horn - South Carolina  6'1"  205lbs



2020: 2nd All-SEC, 16tckls/1TFL, 2INTs/6PUs

Strengths: Plays to his size with physical man coverage. Capable of playing in a variety of coverage schemes. Confident & patience squaring up release. Balances attention between route & the QB. Bodies up down the field before finding the ball. Able to track down receiver after allowing early separation. An underrated blitzer with ability to slip blocks & get after QBs. 

Weaknesses: Too much blatant grabbing & holding during the route. Average directional change when shadowing route. Too content to let others do dirty work in run support. Needs more consistent approach & technique as a tackler. Tunnel vision concerns.

Comp: Jimmy Smith

Grade: 6.46 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)




OT Liam Eichenberg - Notre Dame  6'5"  302lbs



2020: 2nd All-American/1st All-ACC, Jacobs Blocking Trophy

Strengths: Strikes with force into 1st contact. Well-schooled working hip to hip on double teams. Works with good strain during sustain phase as a run blocker. Diverts & turns his block away from the run lane. Displays feel for drop depth in his sets. Able to slide & recover once pass rush disengages. 

Weaknesses: Timing, hand placement & body control all need work in pass sets. High hands easily swatted & discarded. Punch is monotonous & predictable. Has a tendency to play far too forward when seeking moving targets. One-pop hitter, allowing rushers secondary opportunities.

Comp: Justin Pugh

Grade: 6.27 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)




WR Elijah Moore - Mississippi  5'10"  178lbs



2020: 1st All-American/1st All-SEC, 86rec/1,193yds/8TDs, 14c/64yds

Strengths: Consistent vertical push off the snap to threaten CBs. Leverages defenders away from route breaks. Slams on brakes suddenly from full speed on CBs. Tracks & stacks defender & adjusts into catch-ready positioning. Has strong hands. Able to secure catches through heavy hits. Excellent spatial awareness against zone. 

Weaknesses: Has tendency to use elongated step into route breaks. Limited catch radius dealing with tall throws. Had focus drops when LBs close in. Elusiveness after the catch is average.

Comp: Antonio Brown

Grade: 6.43 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



CB Caleb Farley - Virginia Tech  6'1"  207lbs



Strengths: Hassles receivers with length & strength. Plus route redirection from zone coverage. Stalks the release with effective one or two hand punch. Maintains focus & positioning when tracking deep targets. Shows straight-line closing speed. Has natural ball skills. Takes play-side angles in challenging pass lanes. 

Weaknesses: Needs to improve fundamentals & technique. Has a clunky backpedal. More reactive than instinctive. Could struggle staying connected with complex routes. Inconsistent balance & form as a run-support tackler.

Comp: Sean Smith

Grade: 6.38 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)




TE Pat Freiermuth - Penn State  6'5"  251lbs



2020: 1st All-BIG 10, 23rec/310yds/1TD

Strengths: Coveted combination of size & athletic ability. Quality feet in space for a big man. Displayed ability to keep one-hand touches alive for the catch. Big target for chain-moving throws. Has build-up speed to climb past LBs into the seam. Stacks downhill yards after the catch. Makes impressive athletic recoveries & finishes blocks.

Weaknesses: Can improve his angles as a blocker. Inconsistent footwork to sustain 2nd level blocks. Slowed by physical coverage. Average quickness to separate on lateral route breaks. Inconsistent catch focus to finish in traffic.

Comp: Tyler Eifert

Grade: 6.30 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



WR Nico Collins - Michigan  6'4"  215lbs



Strengths: Possesses quality speed for such a big target. Aggressive hand-fighter. Powerful drive strides into routes. Highly competitive with winning, jump-ball traits. Intuitive late-separation talent. Unfazed by physical contact through the catch. Flashes impressive technique & strength as a run blocker.

Weaknesses: Unable to elude & rid himself of a press defender consistently. Needs work setting up route breaks. Turns are too rounded. Lacks quickness & route acumen to open desirable windows. Will need to prove he can work all 3 levels.

Comp: N'Keal Harry

Grade: 6.28 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)



TE Brevin Jordan - Miami(FL)  6'3"  245lbs



2020: 38rec/576yds/7TDs

Strengths: Highly decorated as an in-line & slot option. Takes tight angles on out-breaking routes. Scrambles open on off-schedule pass plays. Absorbs heavy strikes & continues on after the catch. Can be a punishing runner with the ball.

Weaknesses: Drops head into contact & blocks with erratic technique. Block sustain will require much more work. Tight hips restrict intermediate opportunities. Needs more aggression at top of the route. Excessive body-catching & bobbles. Not a very reliable option when catch is contested.

Grade: 5.95 (Backup/Special Teamer)



EDGE Jaelan Phillips - Miami (FL)  6'6"  260lbs



2020: 2nd All-American/2nd All-ACC, 45tckls/15.5TFLs, 8scks, 1INT

Strengths: Accelerates into the edge. Flexible upper-body to help flip over the punch at the top of the rush. Closing burst to the QB is not in doubt. Very aware as a run defender. Sees mesh point clearly on zone reads & recognizes lane choices by runner. 

Weaknesses: Pad level rises too tall off the snap. Below-average core strength. Gets bounced off his base during redirect blocks. Needs better command with his hands as a rusher. Fails to stack moves to stay ahead of pass blockers.

Comp: Maxx Crosby

Grade: 6.39 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



OT James Hudson - Cincinnati  6'4"  302lbs



2020: 1st All-AAC

Strengths: Enticing blend of agility & athleticism. Moves like a TE on LB cut-offs & pulling blocks. Patient & natural climbing to 2nd level. Above-average radar to find & seal the edge on play-side runs. Instinctive feet drive & finish when blocker tries to escape. 

Weaknesses: Pass protection fundamentals require complete overhaul. Can be slow to activate inside counter slide. Lacks functional power to fight back when edges are challenged. Positioning & footwork are a work in progress. Needs to get his hips engaged. Leaves feet behind & falls off blocks.

Comp: George Fant

Grade: 6.00 (Developmental Traits-Based Prospect)



 QB Kellen Mond - Texas A&M   6'3"  205lbs



2020: 188/297, 63.3%, 2,282yds, 19TDs/3INTs, 74c/294yds/4TDs, Senior Bowl MVP

Strengths: Became a willing pocket who trusted his protection. Quiet lower body when working through progressions. Alters arm slot to deliver ball around bodies & arms. Quick, wrist-flick release. A dangerous zone-read option. Able to break the pocket & move the sticks with chunk plays scrambles.

Weaknesses: Deep balls are often flat & overthrown. Highly inconsistent in working with anticipation. Shies away from big-play opportunities. Will miss late safety movement indicating incoming blitz. Defaults to aiming rather than throwing at times.

Comp: Colin Kaepernick

Grade: 6.12 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)



OT Teven Jenkins - Oklahoma St.  6'5"  310lbs



2020: 1st All-BIG 12

Strengths: Excellent body control. Powerful core allows him to base up & flatten the edge of RBs. Full sustain mode closes door once his hands lock in. Athleticism for smooth drift from block to block on 2nd level. Keeps hands back until his target is within range. Strong, sure hands clench up & stalls rush attack. Solid mirror & redirection win space.

Weaknesses: Longer defenders can stab & separate from him. Could struggle to gain enough depth against speed rush. Loses contact with run blocks, showing occasional leaning.

Comp: Joe Thuney

Grade: 6.42 (Will Be a Starter With First 2 Seasons)



OT Walker Little - Stanford  6'7"  313lbs



Strengths: Smooth into his kick-sets & slides. Able to find speed rushers at top of the arc. Quality redirection quickness against inside counters. Good flexibility in hips & ankles. Strength in hands to snatch  & secure. Ability to process & adjust in his pass protection. Sudden out of his stance and into lateral movements. Has feet to sustain against moving targets in space.

Weaknesses: Below-average core strength. Needs to be quicker & tighter with punch to protect his frame. Struggles to press defenders off his edge. Knees will stiffen at times during pass sets. Loses power as a drive blocker due to hand placement. Below-average contact balance. Inconsistent getting blocks secured & finished in run game. Absorbs power rather than delivering it

Comp: Luke Joeckel

Grade: 6.20 (Good Backup, Could Become a Starter)



LB Jamin Davis - Kentucky   6'4"  234lbs



2020: 102tckls/4TFLs, 1.5scks, 3INTs/1TD

Strengths: Plays with impressive focus & vision. Gains ground quickly. Displays ability to work off the block quickly when positioning is right. Controlled pursuit transitions to tackle-ready platform. Coverage recognition to work high to low. QBs must respect his catch radius.

Weaknesses: Inexperience will show at times. Needs to diagnose & respond just a shade quicker. Room for improvement with hand usage & pad level as a tackler. Underestimates pursuit angle from time to time.

Comp: Kiko Alonso

Grade: 6.35 (Will Be a Starter Within First 2 Seasons)



LB Nick Bolton - Missouri  5'11"  237lbs



2020: 2nd All-American/1st All-SEC, 95tckls/7.5TFLs, 2scks, 5PUs

Strengths: Field-savvy with instincts to diagnose misdirection. Heavy hands with good pop to take on blocks. Pursues ball-carrier with patience & leverage. Excellent feel for attack timing downhill. Great awareness & ballhawking. Enough man-cover talent to play on all 3 downs.

Weaknesses: Average lateral quickness. Inconsistent to strike & separate from blockers. Needs to improve angles to elude box traffic. Top-end speed appears below-average. Below-average lateral agility as an open-field tackler.

Comp: Denzel Perryman
